- Is willpower a good method to lose weight?
- Do you feel ashamed that you can’t lose weight?
- Are any of your weight-loss practices a secret?
I want to share why it took me so long to lose weight. I hope you can learn from my mistakes.
Choices that set me up to fail
I was preoccupied by dieting from the ages of 14 to 24. Looking back it’s easy to see why it was so hard for me to reach a healthy weight.
Based on all the advertisements, magazine covers and throw-away comments I heard adults exchange, I thought the key to losing weight was determination. So when I couldn’t lose weight I felt ashamed. And shame led to secrecy.
By keeping all my weight-loss plans private, I isolated myself with misinformation. So I kept trying to lose weight the wrong way, over and over again (though I was certain it was right). Without talking to anyone else, I didn’t realize all my efforts to lose weight were self-defeating. I blamed myself, instead of my method.
- Do I consider myself undisciplined when I eat something I regret?
- Do I get disappointed in myself for my food choices?
- Do I keep my weight-loss practices secret?
If yes is your answer, you’re trying to lose weight with determination. The belief that weight loss is about discipline sets you up to fail.
Set yourself up for success
Despite popular belief, weight loss is not about determination. Now I know if you want to lose weight it has nothing to do with sacrifice. Anytime you have to apply self control it’s because you’re stopping yourself from doing something you normally do. We are creatures of habit. If you want to lose weight and keep it off you need to build healthy eating and healthy exercise habits. Then healthy choices are second nature.
Habits make choices easy. They give you long-term success.
Laws are never as effective as habits.

Understanding it’s important to s-l-o-w-l-y build healthy habits rather than be determined to follow random rules, changed my life.
