- I wrote a weight-loss book about how I got healthy 18 years ago
- Losing weight is not about “looking good”
- The 3 Steps in my weight-loss book gave me the greatest gift: freedom
I was completely preoccupied by trying to lose weight from the ages of 14 to 24. When I got healthy and enough time had passed to realize what had gone on, I felt a responsibility to share what I wish I’d known when I was trying to lose weight.
When I decided to write a book I was a little scared. I knew I’d put my life on hold until this project was done. But I was also excited.
Why I wrote a weight-loss book
I’m passionate about prevention. When you talk about what you’ve learned it makes an experience – even a horrible experience – worth it.
Your weight, your waist size, and the amount of weight gained since your mid-20s can have serious health implications— Harvard School of Public HealthKnowing you can help others avoid the treacherous path you took means the tough obstacles you’ve overcome serve a larger purpose.
Often people think about weight loss as frivolous and all about trying to look good. But I know losing weight is about having a healthy body and mind so you can feel good.
Being a healthy weight also reduces the risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and can lower the risk of many different cancers.
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. Going after this goal begins with having a healthy relationship with food and exercise.
This is the weight-loss book I needed
Writing my weight-loss book: It took me 10 years to lose 10 pounds was important to me because of all the years I spent trying to lose weight with the wrong information. I was desperate to have freedom from the worry and guilt I associated with eating.
I don’t have a lot of photos from that time in my life. But when I came across what is now my “Before” picture, it really upset me.
This photo reminded me of how hard I was trying to do the right thing and in hindsight, how hopeless it was because of all the self-defeating diet ideas I had dancing around in my head.
My experience may be extreme, but it forced me to get to the bottom of how to lose weight.
Sadly my experience is not unique.
Shocking Weight-loss Statistics
Did you know:
Teen girls are preoccupied by some degree of disordered eating,
spending between 20% and 100% of their waking time
thinking about food, weight and hunger
The annual revenue of the global weight-loss industry
– expected to be $206.4 billion by 2019
Percentage of women aged 15 to 64 who withdraw from life-engaging activities,
like giving an opinion, going to school or going to the doctor,
because they feel badly about the way they look
Preoccupation with weight is an epidemic.
…Imagine if we added up all the hours, resources and unique potential of every person preoccupied with weight and put it toward something productive.
The goal of my weight-loss book is to:
Simplify reaching and maintaining a healthy weight
so you can focus on your REAL goals.
I love blogging and diving deep into topics. I’ve learned so much by fact-checking information about why you should NOT drink diet pop, why you SHOULD drink whole milk and the magical-ness (!) of fiber (working on that post right now… ) But I also wanted to find a comprehensive way to share The 3 Steps that helped me lose weight 18 years ago.
I like sitting down with a book that has a beginning, middle and end, knowing that when I’m done I’m equipped with the information I need to achieve my goal.
So I began to work on my weight-loss book, It Took Me 10 Years to Lose 10 pounds.
Weight-loss book: The making of!
Here’s a quick look at the book-making process.
First I wrote my weight-loss book in a word document. As I went along I made notes re: where to insert pictures, charts and diagrams.
After my weight-loss book was edited I began the artwork. I did collages:
Illustrations:
And photos:
(You’ll find those jelly beans on page 38!)
While my cats were clearly no help (!) I loved having their company.
Each sketch took my patient partner, Alex, at least an hour to make book-ready.
After the initial layout of the text and graphics, I printed each step to mark up.
Then Alex and I spent weeks adding, chopping and changing content.
Finally I got the first proof!
And then the second proof…
… And then the third.
At this point I wasn’t sure if the printer thought I’d lost the plot or if I was just detailed oriented 🙂 Anyways, they were incredibly supportive and I loooved working with them!
Then my first order of weight-loss books arrived.
It was the day I’d been dreaming about since the first time I sat down in front of my computer and saw the cursor blinking on a blank page.
So here we are!
I’m thrilled I finally have a comprehensive way to share The 3 Steps that helped me lose weight 18 years ago.

Hi Kelly,
I have a question about the title of your book/blog. Does “It took me 10 years to lose 10 pounds” mean than when you started eating healthy and stopped the whole crazy diet and exercise scene, it then took you 10 years to lose the last 10 pounds that you wanted to lose. (I think you said you felt you were 30 .lbs overweight at one point). That is, did it literally take 10 years of eating a mostly whole, balanced food diet and exercise to lose 10 pounds. Or does it mean you spent 10 years on the crazy diet and exercise routine before you had your wake-up call and started the peaceful freedom that your living with now? Just curious. If it’s the latter, I wonder how long did it take of being on a normal balanced eating and exercise plan did you each your goal of peace with your body, and the healthy weight that you wanted to be? Months? Years? Not sure if this makes sense.
Hi Kathy!
I love this question. Thank you.
So I was “on” and “off” diets for 10 years. And in the process I gained more weight. I was usually between 10 and 30 pounds overweight. I was so confused and the whole experience was frustrating.
Now I understand that when you restrict what you eat and then get SO hungry that you overeat, these wild extremes put your body into survival mode which slows down your metabolism. Then it’s difficult to lose weight and EASY to gain it.
But the good news!
As soon as I learned what healthy eating and exercise actually looks like and focused on being healthy instead of thin, I reached a healthy weight naturally and quickly. For me it was just a few weeks of focusing on being healthy instead of thin.
Our bodies LOVE routine. So as soon as you get your body into a healthy routine your metabolism breathes a sigh of relief and bounces back 🙂
I share what healthy eating and exercise look like in my book and how to turn your present choices into healthy habits.
Building healthy habits is KEY because they make it really easy to make healthy choices. I never feel deprived! I’m also never hungry.
For the last 20 years food, hunger and weight have been a non-issue and I can focus on the people, animals and projects I love! Having freedom from food obsession has given me my life back.
Thanks Kathy for your thoughtful question! Please ask me anything else. I love to know where I can clarify my message and experience.
